canine flu h3n8 h3n2 strains 350pxIn an important update from the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) and Oakland Veterinary Referral Services (OVRS), they have advised us of confirmed cases of H3N2 Canine Influenza in Michigan (so far, 2 confirmed cases in Macomb county, 1 in Wayne county and 1 in Oakland county).

While this number doesn’t seem like a lot, with the very contagious aspect of the virus, we suspect there may be more unconfirmed cases.

Symptoms to Watch for Include:

  • Dry, hacking cough
  • Coughing up white, foamy phlegm
  • Lethargy
  • Lack of appetite
  • Runny nose (not just moist, but runny)
  • Rapid breathing (not connected to exercise)
  • Fever

What Can You Do??

Make sure your dog is protected by:

  1. Getting the influenza vaccine series
  2. Making sure your local dog park, daycare, grooming or boarding facility require a flu vaccine before pets are allowed.
